I have been playing Dust for about a week so far and I am loving it. I'm usually not very into FPS games, I tend to prefer RTS and puzzle games peppered here and there with a good in-depth RPG. However, Dust just clicked for me. I'm glad to be playing.
I dropped some cash for the optional DLC, mostly to support the game since I enjoy it so much and to play around with some custom builds made from blueprints.
I've decided to spec out a sniper, though I put most of my skills in lower level core upgrades and armor/shield first to boost survivability. However, as I am not very proficient with Sniper Rifles yet I am not getting very many kills. I can camp an objective and make life difficult for the reds, but unless I line up a head-shot I'm injuring without killing. I get many assists, but few kills. I was racking up the kills in the academy, but that was against my fellow oblivious newberries. I understand Dust is largely about persistence and planning and I don't expect to get a really good skill selection for a few months, and even then only in one role.
My current main fittings are a scout (Dragonfly) suit sniper with an NT-511 (Best I can wield right now) a profile dampener, nanohive, scrambler pistol sidearm (Dren) and a light damage modifier. I have a second main that is nearly identical except in an assault suit with a sheild recharger added.
However, I have been doing most of my skirmishing in a Logi suit. I found that I am MUCH more use to my group running uplinks to vital positions and reviving team mates than being a mediocre sniper. I am decent at lining up shots and with the right perch I can rack up kills, but it's very swingy at this point, one battle I'll have 14 kills and another I'll have two. Also, heaven forbid anyone finds me... one short burst hits home and I die.
My question is this: Should I use my Logi build exclusively until I have enough SP to unlock better scout suits and sniper rifle proficiency, so at least I am of use to my team? As fellow Mercs, would you rather a sniper softening your targets around objectives or a medic dropping spawn points in advantageous positions and reviving you?
I keep around eight fittings right now (Sniper, Assault Suit Sniper, Medic, Hacker, Assault, Shotgun Assault, Heavy Suit Sniper, Logi Suit Sniper) and deploy them based on situation, but I am curious as to what the community would rather play with? While I'm new I'd rather be useful, until I can be devastating a few months down the line.
